Advanced hydraulic modeling and flood mitigation solutions for vital facilities.

Hydrological Study and Flood Protection for the Salbukh Security Site in Riyadh

This project represents an advanced model for hydrological studies and flood protection engineering solutions for vital and security facilities in the Salbukh area (north of Riyadh city). Executed for the Ministry of Interior and the Special Security Forces, the scope involved designing water flow paths and coordinating drainage channels supporting the general site layout. This directly helps enhance master plan readiness and improve execution feasibility and safe field operations for the entire complex.

The project focused on studying and analyzing rainwater movement and surface runoff from a comprehensive engineering perspective. This included surveying topographical data and mapping the valley networks (wadis) and flood streams feeding the region. Additionally, digital simulation models were constructed to delineate flood inundation zones and calculate projected flow volumes over extended return periods. This led to designing open channels and concrete box culverts to protect structural systems, alongside civil, hydraulic, and coordination works to deliver a more secure and sustainable security facility in line with building codes and general aesthetics.

Scope of Work

  • Conducting Comprehensive Hydrological StudiesSurveying and analyzing the morphological and hydrological characteristics of the natural catchment basin surrounding the Salbukh site to accurately map critical flood paths and streams.
  • Constructing Simulation Models and Digital ModelingUtilizing advanced engineering software (such as HEC-RAS and HEC-HMS) to calculate stormwater runoff and delineate flood inundation lines for return periods of up to 50 and 100 years.
  • Designing Protection and Water Drainage SystemsPreparing detailed executive engineering blueprints for box culverts and water channels to securely route floodwaters outside the perimeter of the security facility.

Al Marsad Al Makani provided engineering design, quality control, hydraulic, and hydrogeological study services across multiple security and vital projects in the Riyadh region. This was achieved by coordinating and monitoring study phases and aligning them with approved building code requirements and relevant stakeholders. The scope of work also included developing executable site solutions, cross-referencing extracted hydrological data with architectural and structural blueprints, and supporting technical and field execution to guarantee seamless integration between civil, architectural, electrical, and mechanical (MEP) aspects within the project scope.

Services Provided in the Project

  • Morphological Analysis and Spatial Data CollectionStudying the topography of the region and accurately defining catchment areas feeding valleys and tributaries using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and topographical surveying.
  • Digital Modeling and Hydrodynamic SimulationInputting historical rainfall data and computationally simulating flood dynamics to forecast water levels and flow velocities at critical intersections within the security site.
  • Engineering Design for Flood Protection StructuresDeveloping sustainable engineering solutions, including the design of drainage channels, gabions, and concrete box culverts to guarantee the structural stability of road infrastructure and buildings.
  • Technical Reporting and Code GovernanceFormulating final hydrological studies backed by the necessary geotechnical and structural engineering recommendations to secure master plan approvals and safeguard facilities against natural hazards.
